NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
A. RIDGE AND FURROW METHOD SOWING IN SOYBEAN

Problem diagnose: Yield reduction (21%) in soybean due to broadcasting method in erratic rainfall pattern in medium to black soils of the district. The affected area was indentified 20,000 ha.

Intervention: Ridge and furrow method of sowing in soybean. The ridge and furrow method of sowing work as moisture conservation in case of deficient rains and provide drainage in excess rains conditions under medium to black soils.

Results: The ridge and furrow method of sowing in soybean recorded a mean yield 1183 Kg/ha which was 30% higher than that of the obtained with farmers’ practices yield of 910 Kg/ha. The additional net returns of Rs.5323/ha with benefit cost ration of 1.89 were observed.

Impact:The farmers were convinced with the ridge and furrow method of sowing in soybean. The adoption of the technology was observed that about 500 ha area of the total soybean cultivation now is being sown through seed drill as well as ridge and furrow method of sowing.

B.SRI (SYSTEM RICE INTENSIFICATION) METHOD OF TRANSPLANTING IN PADDY

Problem diagnose:Low yield of paddy (900 K/ha) due to insufficient irrigation water under transplanted paddy cultivation. Affected area with problem was identified 600 ha.

Intervention:The SRI is a method of rice cultivation with higher productivity and less cost and less water. It consists with manipulation of cultural practices. Raising of the seedling in nursery by using seed @10 Kg/ha; uprooting of 10-12 days old seedling and transplanting in wide spacing at 25x25 cm.

Results:The SRI method of transplanting in paddy recorded a mean yield 3314 K/ha which was 124% higher than that obtained with farmers practice yield of 1475 Kg/ha. The technology resulted higher net income 33976 Rs/ha with a benefit cost ratio of 2.96 as compared to local practice (17700 Rs/ha, 2.21).

Impact:The farmers were convinced with the SRI method of transplanting in paddy. The adoption of the technology has been observed that it has increased in 200 ha area of the total paddy transplant area. The generation of employment was 23-man-days/season/ha was recorded in the SRI method in the district.
